I was shocked. I couldn’t believe what my grandmother was saying. Could she really be this indifferent? She was, after all, talking about me and my education. It’s not like I understood exactly what taxes were, but it was clear my grandmother did not want to pay them.
My mom, my brother, and I moved in with my grandmother on Long Island after my parents’ divorce and the death of my grandfather in 1955. I was eight. I guess we all figured we would do better together by pooling our resources. The problem was, it was my grandmother’s house and she never let us forget it.
