What about big-box hardware stores like Home Depot? Cooked. Toast. The Boomer “Do-It-Yourselfer” is doing fewer and fewer of the big projects as he or she bumps up against retirement. Gen Xers don’t have the critical mass to take up the slack, and Generation Y is too young. Immigrants don’t own homes. Couple this with the drop in new home sales, and you have a troubling formula.

On the other hand, I am told that when the number of new homes being built begins to wane, kitchens and bathrooms step up to the plate. Remodeling kitchens and bathrooms is very profitable.
