Design by analogy (DbA) identifies the shared characteristics and purposes between two entities. Many examples of DbA currently exist, the most popular being biomimicry, where the inspiration for a design is inspired by nature. For instance, swimming flippers were inspired by the feet of aquatic birds. The seeds, or burrs, of the burdock plant inspired the hook-and-loop system that enables Velcro to work.
