In fiction, the fourth wall is an imaginary barrier separating characters and actors from their audience. For example, during a theatrical performance, an actor may momentarily break character to address the audience directly, causing the illusionary fourth wall to collapse. Once the direct interaction with the audience concludes, the actors return to onstage performance, reinstating the fourth wall.
