Exaggerating the mundane.

To be hyperbolic is to exaggerate but without being taken literally. The word is derived from the Greek huperbolē, meaning “thrown above.”

Picture someone declaring, “I am so hungry I could eat a horse.” While the hunger is genuine, the prospect of devouring a horse is purely hyperbolic. Yet, those around the hungry individual instantly grasp the intensity of the hunger, influencing the choice of a dining venue. Humans use hyperbole to offer a high degree of clarity, and, when well executed, it introduces a slice of humor.
