Understanding the History of Android

In 2005, Google bought Android, Inc., and in 2007 the Open Handset Alliance was announced. The Android operating system was officially released to the open source community under an Apache Software Foundation license.

Google is ultimately an advertising–media company, and its revenue from applications like Gmail are much greater than from Google Play. In order to maximize advertising exposure, the company’s ultimate goal is to have Android widely adopted on as many mobile devices as possible. The Open Handset Alliance consists of all companies involved in the mobile ecosystem, including manufacturers like Samsung and HTC, mobile carriers such as Verizon and AT&T, and many other companies.
