When it came to building innovative technology, we took a bet on a few existing things. First, we took a big bet on the Internet, and on Java as the programming language for the Internet. Second, we relied on the Oracle database. Oracle's database was large and fast, and we were familiar with it, so there was no reason to build our own. There were less expensive options, but we were not as confident that the other solutions would be able to scale. Today, our back end is still a giant Oracle database that we customize for each tenant and where they can continuously update their data.
