Photothermal therapy has been demonstrated using nanorods
(Huang et al. 2006), nanoshells (Hirsch et al. 2003), nano-
cages (Au et al. 2008), and aggregates of nanospheres (Larson
et al. 2007, Zharov et al. 2005). e rst in vivo demonstration
involved the use of gold nanoshells that were injected into a
mouse xenogra tumor and CW NIR irradiation combined with
the use of MRI for temperature monitoring (Hirsch et al. 2003).
