Recently, we developed confocal light absorption and scatter-

ing spectroscopic (CLASS) microscopy (Fang et al. 2007, Itzkan

etal. 2007), which combines LSS with the principles of confocal

microscopy. e multispectral nature of LSS enables it to mea-

sure internal cell structures much smaller than the diraction

limit without damaging the cell or requiring exogenous markers,

which could aect cell function. CLASS microscopy approaches

the accuracy of electron microscopy but is nondestructive and

does not require the contrast agents common to traditional
