4 Chapter 1 IntroduCtIon to Knowledge-Based systems
called perceptrons by Minsky and Papert (1969), which showed how the
knowledge can be represented in a symbolic way, with the advantages of
robustness, parallelism, and self-learning. After that, the late 1980s and 1990s
saw a renewed interest in ANN research, when several different researchers
invented the modified back-propagation learning algorithm. Continuing the
excitement within the AI community, the field also witnessed the develop-
ment of hybrid intelligent systems from 1990 onward. New paradigms, such
as fuzzy logic, genetic algorithms, and agent technology, also have started to
be applied to real-life problems.
