7.1 INTRODUCTION

While research into neural networks was initiated in 1942, the number of

scientists involved was almost negligible for the ﬁrst 40 years. In 1942, Nor-

bert Weiner and his colleagues were formulating the ideas that were later

called “cybernetics” and that he deﬁned as “control and communication in

the animal and the machine.” The basic idea was to treat biological mecha-

nisms from an engineering and mathematical perspective.

In the same year that Weiner was formulating cybernetics, McCulloch
