I use a couple of learning platforms, but I'm on O'Reilly more than anybody else. When you're there, you start learning. I'm never disappointed.I'm always learning. So when I got on to O'Reilly, I was like a kid in a candy store. There are playlists. There are answers. There's on-demand training. It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.

Modems and Dial-Up Networking
Synopsis
- Configure a modem for dialing into my ISP?
Go to System Preferences→Network, and follow these steps:
Select New Location from the Location pull-down menu. Enter a name for the new location (for example, My ISP), and click OK.
Select Internal Modem from the Show pull-down menu.
Fill in the blanks on the PPP panel.
In the TCP/IP panel, select Using PPP from the Configure IPv4 pull-down menu.
Select your modem type from the Modem panel.
Click the Apply Now button.
- Show the modem status in the menu bar?
System Preferences→Network→Show→Internal Modem→Modem→click on the checkbox next to “Show modem status in menu bar”
- Make sure my modem is working?
Internet Connect (
/Applications)→Internal Modem→check the Status area at the bottom of the window- Connect to my ISP automatically when my Mac needs to (e.g., for use with Software Update or .Mac’s Backup application for late-night backups to your iDisk)?
System Preferences→Network→Show→Internal Modem→PPP→PPP Options→select the checkbox next to “Connect automatically when needed”→select the checkbox next to “Prompt every [30] minutes to maintain connection” and change the time from 30 minutes to 10 minutes
- Set my computer to wake up from sleep mode when the modem rings?
System Preferences→Energy Saver→Options→Wake Options→click on the checkbox next to “Wake when the modem detects a ring”
- Find out the speed of my dial-up connection?
Internet Connect (
/Applications)→Internal Modem→check the Status area at the bottom ...
