It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.

Manages communication between processes about the
mounting and unmounting of disk volumes.
On Panther, this takes on part of the role formerly held by
autodiskmount in Jaguar.
diskarbitrationd starts as a bootstrap daemon,
from /etc/mach_init.d/diskarbitrationd.plist
(processed by register_mach_bootstrap_servers),
and stores its PID in
/var/run/diskarbitrationd.pid.

-d Run in debug mode, preventing daemonization.
