When I was in college, my roommate and I had often discussed the idea of buying a motorcycle. I happened to be the first one to land a cycle, a beat-up Honda with bald tires. Naturally, my first trip was three hours up the Garden State Parkway and New Jersey Turnpike to visit him. I lived in southern New Jersey, and he lived in Teaneck, just across from New York City. There seemed to be an unexpectedly large quantity of 18-wheelers on the turnpike, generating buffeting winds. But I made it safely, my roommate was suitably impressed, and we had a wonderful visit. I knew the bald tires wouldn't be much of a problem—as long as it didn't rain.
