It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.

One of the biggest sources of confusion among people new to XML is the relationship between XML and HTML. Granted, you aren't one of these people anymore. You understand that XML is a metalanguage, while HTML is a specific application of SGML. As you may know, there is a bad discrepancy in the fact that HTML is an SGML application, not an XML application. XML describes a more compact metalanguage that has benefits over SGML for Web-based applications. Consequently, it only makes sense that HTML should be based on XML instead of SGML.
