Understanding Databases
Before going on, a few words about databases are in order. If you're familiar with databases and database terminology, you can skip this section.
Simply put, a database is any collection of information. In common computer usage, however, a database is a collection of related information that is stored in a defined way. Here is some of the jargon surrounding databases:
Table—A collection of information that has some logical reason to be together, such as an inventory of parts, a list of customer's names and addresses, or even information about a pet. A table is divided into records (rows) and fields (columns).
