Active Directory site links help domain controllers to find replication partners in other Active Directory sites. Additionally, when all domain controllers are unavailable in an Active Directory site, or no domain controllers were ever available, site links help devices to find the nearest domain controller.
In contrast to Active Directory sites, site links are not created by default. Active Directory site links need to be created manually.
There are two types of Active Directory site links:
IP-based site links are preferred, but when a networking connection is really low on bandwidth and is really unreliable, SMTP-based site links may offer better performance.
