INTRODUCTION

Certain amines condense with various aldehydes in strongly acidic media to give products that are oxidisable to give colour. Among many, the following aldehydes are widely used. They are p-dimethyl aminobenzaldehyde, vanillin, formaldehyde, benzaldehyde, salicyaldehyde, paraldehyde, p-acetyl aminobenzaldehyde, m- and p-nitrobenzaldehyde, etc.

The reaction with aromatic amines produces Schiff bases.
