DEFINITION

Antimalarials are the agents which are used for the treatment of malaria.

Chemical classifcation of antimalarials:

  1. Cinchona alkaloids.

    Example: Quinine, quinidine, cinchonine.

  2. 7-Chloro-4-amino quinolines.

    Example: Chloroquine, amodiaquine.

  3. 9-Amino acridines.

    Example: Acridine, aciquine.

  4. 8-Amino quinolines.

    Example: Primaquine, pentaquine.

  5. 5-Antifolates.

    Example: Nitroguanil, pyrimethamine.

  6. Sulphonamides.

    Example: Sulphodoxine, sulphadiazine.

  7. Sulphones.

    Example: Dapsone.

  8. Dihydrotriazines.

    Example: Cycloguanil.

  9. Tetracyclines.

    Example: Chlortertracycline.

  10. Anti-fungal agents.

    Example: Ketaconazole, mecanazole.

  11. Oxidant drugs.

    Example: Sesiqueterpeneoxides or ketones.
