Some classical music venues are prized for their superior acoustics, and others for their history. The Arena di Verona is exceptional in that it has copious amounts of both. A Roman structure dating from AD 30, the Arena was first used in typical Roman fashion as a venue for athletic tournaments, bazaar-style markets, and even gladiator contests. In those days, the amphitheater had a seating capacity of more than 30,000, about twice what it seats today.
