Notation is the visual representation of the musical patterns that will be sung and played. Notes and rests are the visual signs we use to write music on the staff.
Below is the staff on which music is notated for a melodic instrument or voice. There are no notes for sounds here. It’s just a framework. Each bar contains a black “whole rest” hanging from the second line down to indicate four beats of silence.
