When discussing how many musicians are performing at a given time, we can generalize to three categories: solo, large ensemble, and chamber music. Chamber music covers a very big spread, anything from 2 violins to 20 percussionists. But they all share the same traits of collaboration, equality, and intimacy.
The term “chamber music” comes from sonata da camera, an Italian phrase used during the Renaissance to describe instrumental music composed for private parties at palaces or parlors. Today, chamber music can involve vocalists as well as instrumentalists.
