Many of the greatest works contain at least one dramatic build up to a moving climax. We can’t help but feel engaged and excited when music takes us on a journey, and Ravel’s great ballet score Boléro clearly demonstrates the power of trajectory.
While other works use frequent rhythmic or melodic twists to keep things interesting, this 15-minute piece is little more than a single, slow-burning ascent. Considering the exotic sound of the work, it may surprise some to learn that the composer was French, but he was commissioned to produce a work with such Spanish flair.
