The ultimate example of operatic decadence can be found in Richard Strauss’s Salome, a drama in one act. Based on Hedwig Lachmann’s German translation of Oscar Wilde’s French play Salomé, the German libretto was written by the composer. The opera is best known for its “Dance of the Seven Veils.”
