American composer Samuel Barber finished his most famous work, Adagio for Strings, in 1936. The adagio is actually the second movement to his first String Quartet. This second movement is so passionate, heart wrenching, and beautiful that it has taken on a life of its own. Since its radio broadcast premiere by Arthur Toscanini and the NBC Symphony Orchestra, a number of arrangements and transcriptions of the work have been created.
