As we come to the placement of half steps and whole steps within the mode, it’s time to take a look at the minor mode. Compare it with the major mode and you can see where the placement of the half steps is different. We modify the placement of the half steps by adding three flats. Each flat lowers the pitch of the note immediately following it by one half step. This gives a darker implication to any melodic statement. Play the following minor scales/modes. (Note that today most musicians consider the terms “scale” and “mode” interchangeable.)
