Patented by Parisian Auguste Mustel in 1886, the celesta is an orchestral percussion instrument known for its soft, tinkling, ethereal sound. Although it is categorized as an idiophone, its uniqueness lies in the fact that it is housed in an upright piano-like enclosure and a keyboard is used to operate it.
