Although François Couperin’s name is not the most widely known among the great composers, in his day he was considered the foremost composer of the French Baroque period. His was a lineage of noted musicians; in fact, on his 18th birthday Couperin inherited his father’s post as organist at St. Gervais, a post he held his entire life. He was often referred to as Francois Couperin le Grand (the Great) to differentiate him from another relative who shared his name.
