Hänsel und Gretel is a Märchenoper (fairy tale opera) written in three acts by Engelbert Humperdinck. The German libretto was written by Humperdinck’s sister, Adelheid Wette, who was also the originator of the idea of the opera. She had written several songs for her children for Christmas based on the Grimm brothers’ fairy tale Hänsel und Gretel and asked her brother to set them to music. Humperdinck used the songs as the basis for a full-scale opera, and it premiered on December 23, 1893, conducted by Richard Strauss.
