Filled with some of the best-known melodies in the history of music, Georges Bizet’s Carmen is one of the most frequently performed operas today. Yet when the four-act opera premiered in 1875 at the Opéra-Comique of Paris, the reviews were not favorable. In fact, the piece was criticized for its reliance on realism. Many audience members found Carmen’s behavior too wild and immoral and also objected to the onstage smoking of the chorus of cigarette factory girls. The greatest critique, however, came in reaction to the onstage murder of Carmen.
