Both technical and expressive terms in written music are in the Italian language. Historically, we believe it comes from the Italian Renaissance period. Most Western countries agreed that Italian was more fluid, and therefore better at conveying emotion than the more stolid Anglo-Germanic-Scandinavian languages.
Apparently the Italians did not dispute this.
