Often considered half brass and half woodwind, the serpent is a unique brass instrument invented in 1590. It has historically been made of wood and covered in leather. It is considered a member of the brass family because it produces sound via a player’s lips vibrating into a mouthpiece shaped similar to that of a trombone.
