Like the three musketeers battling King Louis’s army to save their twin brother, a concerto grosso pits a small group of musicians against a larger group, but with less bloodshed.
Popular in the Baroque era, this form of music features three to six soloists (the concertino) who play either together or singly while accompanied by the orchestra (the ripieno). Arcangelo Corelli was well known for expanding his trio sonatas to concerti grossi by alternating between the two violins and cello of the concertino and the string orchestra of the ripieno.
