In 1874, the great Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg received a letter from his compatriot Henrik Ibsen, a prominent writer who had recently adapted his dramatic story Peer Gynt for the stage. In the letter, Ibsen invited Grieg to write incidental music for the new play, and the resulting score was an immediate hit. Years later, Grieg picked highlights from the original 26 sections and compiled them into two suites, for a total of eight selections.1
