In 1985, an aria from Giacomo Puccini’s lesser-known opera Gianni Schicchi (Il Trittico Act III) entitled “O mio babbino caro” was suddenly heard by thousands of movie fans at the very beginning of Ismail Merchant and James Ivory’s adaptation of E. M. Forster’s wonderfully romantic story A Room with a View. The melody of the aria became the theme of the film and was reprised numerous times throughout the feature, including the final scene.
