The story of Jacques Offenbach’s Les Contes d’Hoffmann (The Tales of Hoffmann) begins during the intermission of another famous opera, Mozart’s Don Giovanni. As the poet Hoffmann waits in the lobby bar for Stella, a diva in the show, he begins to sing about the ideal woman. This leads him to recount stories of three past loves: Olympia, a mechanical doll; Antonia, a young girl who loves to sing but for whom the activity further endangers her fragile health; and Giuletta, a conniving courtesan.
