It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.

Renaissance instruments were categorized into some familiar families: woodwinds, brass, stings, and percussion.
Meet the Woodwinds
Examples include the shawn, reedpipe, hornpipe, bagpipe/bladderpipe, panpipe, and recorder. In the woodwind instruments of the Renaissance, holes were simply drilled into the wood at a place easy for hand placement, without regard to pitch irregularities, so players had to compensate on their own.
