Many dances from the Renaissance ended up as musical forms divorced from the original physical moves. The sarabande, also called the sarabanda or zarabanda, is one of those dances, found quite often in Baroque suites.
The dance originated in South America around the 16th century, and was eventually transported to Europe. It was deemed obscene in Spain, yet it was adored by Queen Anne of France.
