Between 1914 and 1916 British composer Gustav Holst wrote his famous symphonic suite The Planets. (See page 190.) The work consists of seven beautiful, exciting, and dynamic orchestral tone poems, each representing one of the seven known planets in our solar system at the time. Holst supplemented each planet name with a descriptive title: “Mars, Bringer of War”; “Venus, Bringer of Peace”; “Mercury, the Winged Messenger”; “Jupiter, Bringer of Jollity”; “Saturn, Bringer of Old Age”; “Uranus, the Magician”; and “Neptune, the Mystic.”
