A young girl’s difficult journey from innocence to womanhood is chronicled in Jules Massenet’s Manon, an opera in five acts. Based on the Abbé Prévost’s novel L’histoire du chevalier des Grieux et de Manon Lescaut, the French libretto was written by Henri Meilhac and Philippe Gille. The piece is Massenet’s most popular opera and includes the poignant soprano aria sung by Manon in Act II, “Adieu, notre petite table” (“Goodbye, our little table”).
