6.1.3 Quality Leadership
Behind every quality organization is a quality leader� Robert Galvin of
Motorola, David Kearns of Xerox, Jack Welch of General Electric, Don
Peterson of Ford Motor Co�, and John Young of Hewlett-Packard are all com-
monly cited examples of leaders who transformed their organizations into
quality organizations� Many examples are also known, however, in which
lack of commitment to quality from top-level leadership was the reason that
organizations could not make any headway in their quality efforts�
“Good leaders come in all shapes, sizes, genders, ages, races, political per-
suasions, and national origins” (Goetsch and Davis 2003, 288)� Authors on
