Bigtable clusters are zonal resources, meaning a given cluster may only operate within a single zone. This restriction allows Bigtable to offer highly performant reads and writes, but does introduce some frailty as a zonal outage can completely debilitate a single-cluster Bigtable instance. For workloads that demand higher availability, a Cloud Bigtable instance may be configured with two separate clusters, each in a different zone of the same region. Cloud Bigtable automatically provides eventual consistency between these clusters, allowing for advanced configurations such as automatic failover.
