Persistent disks on Compute Engine are available in two forms, standard and SSD:
- Standard persistent disks are block storage backed by traditional hard disk drives. These provide decent IO performance at a low cost, and are generally ideal for high-volume use cases where performance is not critical.
- SSD persistent disks, as the name implies, are persistent disks that are backed by SSDs. SSD persistent disks offer a significant performance increase over standard persistent disks, and carry a relatively higher cost per GB.
