Domain-named buckets

Periods (.) in Cloud Storage bucket names hold special significance, as they are exclusively reserved for domain-named buckets. Domain-named buckets allow bucket names to match valid site domains, such as example.website.com, and have a few unique characteristics:

  • First, domain-named buckets can have much longer names than traditional bucket names. Each section between periods can be up to 63 characters long, with a total length of up to 222 characters.
  • Second, in order to use a given domain name, the bucket creator must prove ownership of the domain using Google Webmaster Tools (GWT).
