Golden images

Custom images are extremely useful when creating large-scale solutions on Compute Engine as they allow teams to provision one or more golden images that can be used to quickly spin up new instances with everything they need to start working.

A common workflow is to create a Compute Engine instance from a public image, customize the instance by installing additional tools or applications, and apply any configuration changes. Once the instance is fully provisioned, developers can use the instance's boot disk to create a new custom image.
