Create a development cluster

Before we can start using Bigtable, we'll need to create a new Bigtable instance. Open the Cloud Console and navigate to Navigation menu | Bigtable and click Create instance. Instances require a name, ID, cluster ID, zone, and storage type. For our purposes, provide the following values to minimize cost:

  • Instance name: hello-bigtable
  • Instance ID: hello-bigtable
  • Instance type: development
  • Cluster ID: hello-bigtable-cluster
  • Zone: us-east1-b
  • Storage type: HDD
As the Cloud Console will show, this development cluster should cost about $0.65 per hour to run, enough to quickly burn through free credits or rack up a small bill. Be sure to delete this instance when finished!
