Bigtable leverages several other Google technologies in order to achieve its massive performance and scale. For storage, Bigtable was designed to work well on top of the Google File System (and later Colossus). These data center filesystems allow huge amounts of data to be persisted in a distributed and highly durable manner, with redundancy and latency guarantees built in. They use Google's SSTables to provide in-memory indexing and disk caching. Additionally, Bigtable leverages Chubby for distributed and fault-tolerant file locks.
