Authenticating with the Cloud SQL Proxy

The Cloud SQL Proxy supports standard Google Cloud authentication methods, including service account keys and user credentials. Unlike authorized networks, using the Cloud SQL Proxy requires authorization using Google Cloud IAM, specifically the cloudsql.instances.connect permission. The least permissive role containing this permission is the Cloud SQL Client. Credentials can be provided in a number of ways:

  • Using the GOOGLE_APPLICATION_CREDENTIALS environment variable
  • Explicitly using ./cloud_sql_proxy -credentials_file=<FILE>
  • Using an authenticated Cloud SDK (gcloud auth login)
  • Using platform default credentials for App Engine and Compute Engine
  • As a secret for use in Kubernetes Engine
