Even the minimum production Bigtable cluster of three HDD nodes has a running cost of about $1,500 per month. Because of this, Google provides a single-node development cluster. This cluster lacks the redundancy and performance needed for production workloads. As a result, Google offers no SLA for development instances, but they are very useful for learning and proof-of-concept work. Development clusters may be upgraded to a full production-ready cluster at any time, but note that the disk type used cannot be changed during this upgrade.
