There really are no notable differences with data encryption in SQL Server 2014 compared to what was available in SQL Server 2012. However, SQL Server 2014 now supports encryption for backups, without requiring implementation of TDE for the database itself. Setting up a database master key (DMK) in the master database and creating a certificate or asymmetric key is still a prerequisite for encrypting a backup. For more information on encrypting backups, see Chapter 11, “Database Backup and Restore.”
